Parkweg police nab five suspects in Westdene business robbery

In a display of rapid response and coordinated police work, the Parkweg Tracing and Intervention Unit arrested five suspects on Wednesday, 17 December, shortly after a bold armed robbery at a foreign-owned business in Westdene.

At approximately 2:00 PM, four men entered the local shop. According to Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, the spokesperson for the operation, one suspect, armed with a 9mm pistol, immediately held the shop owner and two customers at gunpoint. While the victims were forced to the ground, the other three accomplices ransacked the premises, seizing an undisclosed amount of cash and multiple cartons of cigarettes. During the tense ordeal, a single shot was fired into the ceiling by the armed suspect, reportedly as a warning to ensure compliance. Miraculously, no one was injured.

The suspects fled the scene in a red Toyota Corolla, but their freedom was short-lived. Leveraging eyewitness accounts and coordinated patrols, the Parkweg unit, known for its targeted anti-crime operations, quickly disseminated the vehicle’s description across the Bloemfontein Central Business District (CBD).

Within an hour of the robbery, the sharp-eyed members of the unit located the stationary getaway car. A tactical approach and swift arrest followed, leading to the detention of all five alleged participants—four who entered the shop and an additional suspect believed to be the getaway driver. The ages of the apprehended men range from 25 to 70.

A search of the vehicle yielded the instrument of the crime: the 9mm pistol used in the robbery, along with live ammunition. Both the red Toyota Corolla and the firearm were seized for forensic analysis, which will include ballistic testing to determine if the weapon has been used in other unsolved crimes in the region.

The five suspects now face a litany of serious charges, including business robbery and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. They are currently in custody and are expected to make their first appearance before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court to hear the formal charges against them.

Local community leaders and business owners in Westdene have expressed relief at the swift arrests. “This kind of quick action sends a strong message,” said Mr. Abdi Hassan, chairman of the Westdene Business Association. “It disrupts the sense of impunity that these criminals often operate with. We are grateful to the police unit for their exceptional work today.”

Sergeant Kareli praised the collaboration between the police and the public. “This successful operation is a direct result of the community’s willingness to come forward with immediate information and the unit’s readiness to act on it decisively,” he stated. “We are committed to making Bloemfontein’s streets safer, especially during the festive season when such crimes tend to increase.”

The investigation remains open as police work to determine if the suspects are linked to other recent robberies in the Mangaung Metropolitan area.
