The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is poised to release a crucial interim report into allegations of massive corruption and maladministration at Tembisa Hospital, a scandal first exposed by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
Deokaran was assassinated four years ago after she raised the alarm over a web of suspicious contracts at the health facility. The upcoming report is expected to detail the progress of the SIU’s investigation into these questionable tenders, which are estimated to be worth a staggering R2.3 billion.
The probe has implicated several key figures, including the convicted criminal Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Also named is businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who is alleged to be the mastermind behind the sophisticated syndicate believed to have siphoned millions from the public health system.
The release of the report marks a significant step in a case that has come to symbolize both the brazen theft of state resources and the extreme dangers faced by those who attempt to expose it.
