Nelson Mandela University has expressed deep shock and sadness following a tragic incident that claimed the life of one student and left another injured at an off-campus residence in Summerstrand on Monday night.
According to the university, students were attacked during a break-in at their private accommodation. One student succumbed to their injuries, while another was taken to hospital and is receiving medical care.
In a statement, the institution conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the deceased student and wished the injured student a speedy recovery.
“The University extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and peers of the student who passed away, and wishes the injured student a full and speedy recovery,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, counselling and psychosocial support have been made available to affected students through the University’s Emthonjeni Student Wellness unit.
The university added that it is in contact with authorities and will continue providing support to all those affected as investigations continue.
