Shootout in Soshanguve Leaves Suspects on the Run, Stolen ATM Recovered

A late-night police operation in Soshanguve turned violent after suspects linked to a business robbery opened fire on officers, leading to a shootout and the recovery of a stolen ATM and an unlicensed firearm.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident took place on Monday night, 4 May 2026, at around 21:15. Police were acting on intelligence related to a robbery in Temba, where an ATM had been stolen from a local supermarket.
The information led officers to a house in Block PP2, Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. Police placed the premises under surveillance before moving in to execute a planned operation.
However, as officers approached the house, suspects inside allegedly opened fire, triggering a shootout. Despite the confrontation, the suspects managed to flee the scene and remain at large.
A search of the property led to the recovery of the stolen ATM, along with tools believed to have been used in the robbery, including a grinder and a crowbar. Police also seized an AK-47 rifle loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition.
SAPS confirmed that the firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in other crimes.
District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine praised the officers involved for their professionalism and commitment during the high-risk operation. He emphasized that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the suspects.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
