The Save South Africa Civic Movement has condemned the alleged conduct of public representatives in Madibeng Municipality following the circulation of a controversial voice recording on social media.
In a statement released on 20 April 2026, the organisation said it was “disgusted” by the contents of what is described as a secret meeting between the Executive Mayor and opposition councillors. According to reports by TimesLIVE and GaRankuwa Mail, the recording allegedly captures discussions aimed at undermining the ANC. It is further claimed that financial assistance was promised and that money may have been exchanged during the meeting.
The civic movement stated that these allegations, if proven, strike at the heart of ethical leadership and undermine public trust in local government. It also noted that during the same alleged meeting, its president, Sydney Monnakgotla, was reportedly criticised for his ongoing efforts to demand accountability and expose wrongdoing within the municipality.
According to Save South Africa, Monnakgotla has consistently raised concerns affecting residents, challenged irregular conduct, and advocated for transparency and clean governance. The organisation argued that attempts to discredit him reflect resistance from those who are uncomfortable with accountability.
The movement reiterated its firm stance against corruption, rejecting any abuse of public office for political manipulation, factional interests, or personal gain. While acknowledging that a letter has surfaced claiming the recording is fabricated, it stressed that such claims do not remove the need for a thorough and independent investigation.
Save South Africa has called on the Speaker of Council to urgently table the matter before council to allow for a full and independent investigation. The organisation insists that those found responsible must face consequences, and that the Executive Mayor be held accountable if implicated.
