The uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) has confirmed that it will proceed with its legal challenge against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over the 2024 general elections, while still maintaining open communication with the electoral body on broader democratic issues.
Despite the ongoing court case set to be heard in June, both the MKP and the IEC recently met at former president Jacob Zumaās residence in Nkandla. The discussions reportedly focused on key electoral matters, including preparations for upcoming local government elections, voter apathy, and the overall performance and credibility of the IEC.
According to both parties, the engagement was constructive, although no final agreement was reached. They have since agreed to hold another meeting to continue discussions.
MKP National Chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko said the partyās legal action should not be seen as preventing engagement with the electoral body. He stressed that institutions central to democracy still require dialogue between all stakeholders, even when disputes are being handled in court.
He added that citizens and political parties all have a role to play in strengthening governance and ensuring trust in democratic processes.
The IEC, meanwhile, is continuing its preparations for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for later this year, amid broader public debate about voter confidence in the electoral system.
