Fuel Prices Rise Again as Motorists Bear the Brunt

South African motorists are paying more at the pumps from Wednesday, 3 December 2025, as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources implemented the latest fuel-price adjustments.

Both grades of petrol 93 and 95 octane have increased by 29 cents per litre, while diesel has seen a much bigger jump. Diesel 0.05% is up by around 65 cents, and diesel 0.005% has climbed by 82 cents per litre. Prices for illuminating paraffin and LPG gas have also risen.

Government says the increases are mainly caused by higher international oil and refined-fuel prices, driven by global supply pressures. Although the rand made slight gains against the US dollar, the strengthening was not strong enough to offset international fuel-cost increases. Adjustments to local fuel-price margins, as part of regulated pricing, also contributed.

The latest hikes come as many South Africans prepare for holiday travel, raising concerns about the cost of long-distance trips and the impact of rising diesel prices on transport, goods delivery, and food prices.
