Bridging the Digital Divide: dtic Hosts Masterclass to Empower Youth-Led SMMEs in Pretoria

In a significant push to bolster South Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) is hosting a comprehensive SMME masterclass today, focused squarely on equipping young business owners with the essential digital tools to compete and thrive. The event, held on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, at the prestigious Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) campus, brings together a select group of aspiring and established entrepreneurs for a deep dive into the mechanics of modern business.

Titled “Digital Innovation for Market Domination,” the masterclass represents a strategic intervention by the government to address one of the most significant barriers facing small businesses: the digital divide. In today’s increasingly online economy, a lack of digital skills can stifle growth and limit market access, and this initiative aims to dismantle that barrier.

A Collaborative Drive for Practical Skills

The dtic is not acting alone. The masterclass is powered by a formidable coalition of partners, each bringing a unique expertise to the table. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) is contributing insights into leveraging new technologies, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is facilitating youth participation and ongoing support, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is providing a crucial perspective on scaling businesses to tap into regional and global value chains.

“This is more than just a workshop; it’s a catalyst for change,” a dtic spokesperson stated. “We are moving beyond theoretical business advice and providing hands-on, actionable training that a young entrepreneur can implement the very next day to see real results.”

Curriculum Designed for Real-World Impact

The agenda for the day is meticulously crafted to cover the most critical aspects of a digital business strategy. Participants are engaging in hands-on sessions covering:

  • E-commerce Integration: Practical guides on setting up secure online storefronts, managing digital inventory, and navigating logistics and payment gateways.
  • Data-Driven Digital Marketing: Moving beyond simple social media posts, entrepreneurs are learning to use analytics to understand customer behaviour, execute targeted advertising campaigns on platforms like Google and Facebook, and master Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to increase their online visibility.
  • Strategic Business Growth: Sessions focus on using digital tools for financial management, customer relationship management (CRM), and developing scalable business models that can attract investment.

“The gap between a great idea and a sustainable business is often filled with practical challenges,” said one of the lead facilitators. “Our goal is to fill that gap with knowledge, specifically the digital knowledge that is non-negotiable in the 21st century.”

Empowering a New Generation

The focus on youth-led businesses is particularly strategic. With youth unemployment remaining a critical challenge, fostering successful entrepreneurship is seen as a vital pathway to job creation and economic inclusion. By providing these targeted resources, the dtic and its partners are investing in the entrepreneurs who are most adaptable and digitally native, yet often lack the foundational business acumen to scale their operations.

For the attendees, the masterclass is a rare opportunity to network with peers, receive direct mentorship from industry experts, and leave not just with a certificate, but with a concrete, digitally-enhanced plan to grow their ventures, boost their competitiveness, and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s economy.
