Alexandra Taxi Association Chairperson Vusi Mayaba Gunned Down in Woodmead

The Gauteng taxi industry has been hit by yet another fatal attack following the death of Alexandra Taxi Association chairperson Vusi Mayaba, who was shot and killed on Thursday night. Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela confirmed the incident, describing it as a major blow to ongoing efforts to stabilise the sector.

Mayaba was attacked shortly after leaving a restaurant in Woodmead, north of Johannesburg. Details surrounding the shooting remain limited, and police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances and possible motives.

His murder comes amid a growing wave of violence linked to the Alexandra taxi industry. Earlier this week, two taxi owners from the same association were killed in a drive-by shooting in Midrand, raising fears of escalating tensions among operators.

Johannesburg MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene has expressed concern about the surge in attacks, urging for calm and cooperation with law-enforcement agencies.

“We are extremely worried about the ongoing violence in the taxi industry,” Kunene said. “These incidents threaten the safety of commuters, operators, and the broader public. We urge stakeholders to allow investigations to unfold.”

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the recent killings are connected, but both provincial and local government say they are monitoring the situation closely.
