The City of Tshwane has announced the temporary closure of two public swimming pools due to an ongoing shortage of chlorine gas, a vital chemical used to maintain safe water quality.
According to a media alert issued on Monday, the shortage has affected operations at several municipal pools. Since the start of the swimming and gala season in September, the City’s Swimming Pools Section has been monitoring, testing and treating water daily to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
However, both contracted chlorine-gas suppliers have informed the municipality of unexpected delivery delays. These disruptions stem from a shortage of operational cylinders within the broader market—an issue Tshwane says is beyond its control. Without a consistent supply, some pools cannot maintain the strict disinfection levels required for safe public use.
As a result, Saulsville Swimming Pool and Tjaart van Vuuren Swimming Pool facilities have been temporarily closed until further notice
The City emphasised that the health and safety of swimmers remains the top priority. While municipal teams continue to uphold all other aspects of pool maintenance, the safe operation of facilities cannot be guaranteed without adequate chlorine levels.
Further, Tshwane apologised for the inconvenience and assured residents that officials are working closely with suppliers to expedite deliveries and resume normal operations as soon as possible. Updates will be shared through the City’s official communication platforms.
