Sekhukhune’s Leadership Test in Polokwane Derby as Sundowns Seek Redemption

The Betway Premiership spotlight shifts this weekend as surprise package Sekhukhune United face a tough local derby, while champions Mamelodi Sundowns aim to rebound from their first defeat in a truncated round of fixtures.

With Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates occupied in CAF competitions, the stage is set for a compelling Saturday. The main event is the Limpopo derby at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, where league leaders Sekhukhune United take on Polokwane City.

‘Babina Noko’ are the division’s last remaining unbeaten side, but their momentum was checked by a frustrating 1-1 midweek draw with Chippa United. The match saw veteran Bradley Grobler salvage a point with a late penalty, only to miss a second spot-kick in injury time that would have extended their lead at the summit to four points. This derby presents a significant hurdle as they look to reassert their authority.

Later in the evening, all eyes will be on Mamelodi Sundowns as they host Richards Bay at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The defending champions are reeling from a shock 1-0 midweek loss to Golden Arrows, which handed Sekhukhune the initiative in the title race.

Coach Miguel Cardoso has moved to quash any talk of a crisis, emphasizing his team’s unity. “We are strong in the club, committed to each other… As much crisis as people are trying to create around us, we will be brave, strong and courageous to keep going. We will get better,” he asserted.

The weekend’s other fixtures see the confident Golden Arrows, fresh from their historic win over Sundowns, hosting Orbit College, while Durban City faces Magesi FC in a coastal clash.

Saturday Fixtures:

  • Afternoon: Polokwane City vs Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows vs Orbit College
  • Evening: Mamelodi Sundowns vs Richards Bay, Durban City vs Magesi FC
