President Cyril Ramaphosa has removed Sisisi Tolashe from her position as Minister of Social Development in terms of Section 91(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.
The Presidency announced the decision on Thursday, confirming that Tolashe has been relieved of her duties.
In the interim, President Ramaphosa has appointed Sindisiwe Chikunga as Acting Minister of Social Development pending the appointment of a full-time minister.
Chikunga, who currently serves as Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, will oversee the portfolio until a replacement is announced.
The Presidency has not yet indicated when the new appointment will be made.
The Department of Social Development plays a critical role in overseeing social welfare programmes, including social grants distributed through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
