With just two days into the reopening of Schools around South Africa a joint operation by the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has led to multiple fines and heightened road safety measures in Bekkersdal, Gauteng.
The integrated learner transport safety operation was carried out in the Western Corridor of Bekkersdal, targeting vehicles responsible for transporting school learners. Authorities reported that the operation resulted in 30 fines amounting to R22,700 for various offences, including overloading and operating unroadworthy vehicles.
Officials said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of learners, particularly as the second term of the 2026 academic year begins. The focus was on enforcing compliance with road traffic regulations and ensuring that all learner transport vehicles meet safety standards.
The multi-disciplinary operation was conducted in areas surrounding several local schools, including Isiqalo Primary School, Maputle Primary School, Kgothalang Secondary School, Seatile Primary School, and Itumeleng Special School.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safer roads and the protection of learners, warning that non-compliant drivers will continue to face strict enforcement action.
