In a feat many South Africans believed was impossible, Eskom has announced the country has officially enjoyed over four consecutive months without load shedding. This milestone is a direct result of the utility’s Generation Recovery Plan, which is yielding dramatic improvements.
The numbers speak for themselves: the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) has surged to a month-to-date average of 71.15%, a level not seen since 2021. A key driver is a massive year-on-year reduction of 3,146MW in unplanned breakdowns—equivalent to taking an entire power station like Duvha offline for repairs.
Further bolstering the grid, the return of Koeberg’s Unit 1 is imminent, promising an additional 930MW of stable, base-load power. Energy analyst Chris Yellend hailed the progress as a “very significant and dramatic operational performance improvement,” crediting the Eskom Generation team for achieving what was once a distant dream.
