Arms Dealer and Police Officer Arrested After Weapons Seizure at KZN Roadblock

An arms dealer and a serving police officer have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal after police allegedly discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition in their vehicle during a roadblock operation west of Durban.

The arrest took place at the Marianhill Toll Plaza during a coordinated law enforcement operation led by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma. Officers conducting the roadblock reportedly found several firearms along with approximately 800 rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle.

According to authorities, the two suspects failed to produce valid documentation required under the Firearms Control Act to lawfully possess or transport the weapons. As a result, both individuals were taken into custody and formally charged.

MEC Duma confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were unable to account for the permits authorising the possession of the firearms and ammunition. He also raised concerns about the vehicle used by the suspects, which was allegedly fitted with unauthorised lighting.

“They have already been charged, and the legal process will now take its course,” Duma said. “Their vehicle was also fitted with multiple lights that are not permitted. This kind of behaviour intimidates road users. They flick the lights, people get scared, and that is not allowed.”

The operation formed part of ongoing efforts by provincial authorities and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal firearms, criminal activity, and the abuse of authority on KwaZulu-Natal roads.

Police investigations are continuing, and further charges may be added as the case develops.
