What You Need to Know About the SASSA Review

Have you received an SMS about a SASSA review, or has your grant payment unexpectedly stopped? This is a critical process to ensure you continue receiving your grant. Here is everything you need to know.

What is the SASSA Review?

The SASSA Review is a verification process where the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) reassesses whether beneficiaries still qualify for their grants. During the review, SASSA checks your personal details, income, and employment status to ensure that financial assistance goes only to those who still meet the eligibility criteria.

Who Needs to Complete a Review?

Any SASSA grant recipient can be selected for a review. This includes beneficiaries of the:

  • Old Age Grant
  • Disability Grant
  • Child Support Grant
  • Foster Child Grant
  • Care Dependency Grant
  • War Veterans Grant

Your employment status does not exempt you from this process; any beneficiary may be contacted to confirm their eligibility.

What to Bring to Your Review Appointment

When attending your review, you must bring the following original documents and certified copies:

  • South African ID or Smart ID Card
  • Proof of Residence (a recent utility bill, lease agreement, or a sworn affidavit)
  • Proof of Income or latest payslip (if applicable)
  • Bank statements for the last three months
  • Proof of any other income (e.g., UIF, private pension, or spousal support)
  • Your bank account details (a bank card or an official confirmation letter)
  • Medical report or doctor’s assessment (for Disability Grant applicants)
  • School confirmation letter or proof of enrolment (for Child Support Grants)
  • Proof of marital status (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or death certificate of a spouse)

Important Note: If you are reviewing a Child Support Grant for a child over 3 years old, you must bring the child with you for a new biometric screening.

SASSA Income Thresholds (2025)

  • Old Age, Disability, and War Veterans Grants:
    • Single Applicant: Up to R8,070 per month (R96,840 per year)
    • Married Couple (combined): Up to R16,140 per month (R193,680 per year)

Key Reminders for Beneficiaries

If you receive a review notification or your grant payment stops, visit your nearest SASSA office as soon as possible. Ideally, complete your review before the 15th of the month to ensure your grant can be reinstated by month-end.

SASSA offices often experience high demand, especially during system updates. To ensure you are assisted on the same day:

  • Arrive early
  • Aim to be among the first 30 people in line, particularly at busy branches like Soshanguve NAFCOC
