Three Arrested in Mabopane Crackdown on Facebook Marketplace Robberies

A targeted police operation aimed at curbing robberies linked to Facebook Marketplace transactions has resulted in the arrest of three suspects in Mabopane and the seizure of an unlicensed firearm along with suspected stolen property.
According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the arrests followed a coordinated follow-up investigation conducted by officers from Mabopane SAPS and Soshanguve SAPS. The operation was launched after information surfaced about a carjacking incident that took place in Soshanguve but was reported in Mabopane.
During the operation, officers identified a Toyota Quantum carrying three occupants believed to be linked to the incident. The vehicle was stopped and searched, along with the suspects.
Police discovered a firearm hidden in the waistband of one of the passengers. The weapon was later identified as a Taurus pistol with its serial number removed, raising suspicions that it could be connected to previous criminal activities.
Authorities also recovered a magazine and six rounds of ammunition during the search.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects may be connected to a recent hijacking case after officers found cellphones belonging to the victim in the possession of the other occupants in the vehicle.
The firearm and ammunition were confiscated as evidence and will undergo forensic testing to determine whether they were used in other crimes.
Police believe the arrests may be linked to a broader pattern of robberies in which criminals allegedly use Facebook Marketplace to lure victims under the pretext of buying or selling items. Victims are then robbed or hijacked when they arrive for arranged meetings.
Investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects are connected to additional cases in Mabopane, Soshanguve and nearby communities.
Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine commended the officers involved for their swift action and dedication in addressing crime in the area.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to exercise caution when using online marketplaces, advising them to arrange meetings in safe, public locations such as police stations whenever possible.
The three suspects are expected to appear in court soon, facing charges including armed robbery, carjacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.
