Smooth Start to Matric Exams in Gauteng

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has confirmed that the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations began smoothly across the province, with no major disruptions or irregularities reported.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, a total of 16,968 candidates wrote the three-hour Computer Applications Technology (CAT) Paper 1 practical on Tuesday morning at 09:00.

Chiloane stated that only four examination centres recorded minor incidents, all of which were swiftly addressed before the sessions began to ensure no learners were disadvantaged.

At Letsibogo Maths, Science, and ICT School of Specialisation in Meadowlands, Soweto, a power outage occurred on Monday afternoon. The school quickly implemented its contingency plan by using a generator, allowing exams to proceed without interruption. Similarly, PJ Simelane Secondary School in Soweto used a generator to mitigate local power supply challenges.

In Bramley, a brief power delay at Liberty Community School caused a slightly late start, but the issue was promptly resolved, and all candidates completed their exams successfully.

At Falcon Educational Centre in Dawn Park, 21 learners were safely relocated to a neighbouring centre to complete their practicals after a technical server issue was detected. The Department said this precautionary measure ensured no student was affected.

The Department also noted minor absenteeism among both full-time and part-time candidates but stressed that the figures were not significant enough to affect the overall success of the examination process.

MEC Chiloane commended the preparedness and swift response of examination teams across the province.

“We are encouraged by the commitment displayed by our teams and are satisfied that these minor incidents did not compromise the examination’s integrity. The Department will continue to monitor all centres across Gauteng closely to ensure the smooth administration of this crucial assessment,” said Chiloane.
