ActionSA’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, Xolani Khumalo, has officially been sworn in as a councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
The ceremony took place at the council chambers in Germiston on Monday, marking a significant step in Khumalo’s transition from activism and television work into formal politics.
Khumalo, best known for hosting the television show Sizok’thola, was unveiled as ActionSA’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni in October. His appointment to the council follows the dismissal of two ActionSA councillors due to what the party described as “poor performance.” He now occupies one of those vacant seats, alongside fellow appointee Gavin Siti.
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said Khumalo’s swearing-in was a strategic decision aimed at giving him first-hand experience of municipal governance and the inner workings of the metro ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
“This step will allow our mayoral candidate to understand the city’s challenges from within the council and prepare him to lead effectively,” Mashaba said.
Khumalo has vowed to focus on addressing service delivery failures, tackling corruption, and restoring accountability in Ekurhuleni. “Our residents deserve reliable services, jobs, and safety in their communities. We’re here to reclaim this city from criminals and incompetence,” he said after taking the oath of office.
