Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for Parts of Gauteng and Limpopo

The South African Weather Service has issued multiple weather warnings for severe thunderstorms expected to affect several provinces on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, urging residents to exercise caution.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for parts of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The warning highlights the risk of significant impacts, including flooding in low-lying areas, damage to infrastructure and property, and disruptions to essential services such as electricity and communication. Strong winds and hail are also expected to contribute to hazardous conditions.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 2 warning remains in place for the same regions, particularly affecting Mpumalanga and central parts of Limpopo.

“A high likelihood of minor impacts due to severe thunderstorms are expected over Mpumalanga and the central parts of Limpopo. Severe thunderstorms may cause localised flooding and damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock due to heavy downpours and strong damaging winds,” said SAWS.

Authorities have warned that these conditions could lead to localised flooding, short-term disruption of municipal services, damage to vehicles and informal settlements, and possible agricultural losses.

The warnings are valid from midnight to late evening on Tuesday, with some alerts taking effect from midday. Residents, particularly those in flood-prone and low-lying areas, are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather developments.

Motorists are also advised to exercise caution on the roads, as wet conditions and flooding may increase the risk of accidents.
