Ramaphosa, Putin Talk Peace Efforts and Strengthening SA–Russia Ties

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s support for diplomatic and peaceful efforts to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation.

The commitment was reiterated during a telephone conversation between President Ramaphosa and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, 10 February 2026. During the call, President Putin briefed Ramaphosa on the current situation in Ukraine and outlined Russia’s stated commitment to pursuing a diplomatic solution to the war.

South Africa has consistently maintained a neutral stance on the conflict, calling on all parties to prioritise dialogue and negotiations as the only viable path to peace.

The two leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral relations, with President Ramaphosa welcoming ongoing engagements aimed at advancing a mutually beneficial trade and investment framework under the Russia–South Africa comprehensive strategic partnership.

Cooperation within key international platforms, including BRICS and the G20, also featured prominently in the discussions, highlighting continued collaboration on global economic and political issues.

In addition, Presidents Ramaphosa and Putin pledged their support for the process of returning South Africans currently fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. Teams from both countries will continue engagements to finalise the arrangements for their return.

The call underscores South Africa’s continued diplomatic engagement on international conflicts while reinforcing strategic ties with key global partners.
