KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is expected to appear once again before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday morning as part of its ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption and political interference within the justice system.
Mkhwanazi, who was the first witness to testify when the committee began its hearings, is also set to be the final witness before proceedings conclude.
The committee was established to probe claims of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference affecting the country’s law enforcement and justice institutions.
These allegations first came to light during a media briefing held by Mkhwanazi in Durban in July last year. During that briefing, the provincial police commissioner raised concerns about alleged interference and criminal influence within the justice system.
Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee has now called Mkhwanazi back to respond to additional questions that emerged during testimonies from other witnesses throughout the hearings.
Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola told the committee on Tuesday that President Cyril Ramaphosa supported the proposal that the National Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) should be phased out gradually rather than disbanded immediately.
Masemola said he had also asked the president to engage with Police Minister Senzo Mchunu regarding the directive to dismantle the task team with immediate effect.
Mchunu was recently placed on special leave following allegations relating to criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference within the justice system.
The Ad Hoc Committee’s hearings form part of broader efforts to examine the integrity and functioning of law enforcement structures tasked with addressing politically motivated crimes in South Africa.
