The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has announced the departure of its long-serving spokesperson, Steve Mabona, marking the end of nearly a decade of dedicated service in the province’s basic education sector.
In a statement shared by the department, Mabona was praised for his commitment to transparent and responsive communication, which played a crucial role in strengthening public trust. Over the years, he became a key figure in bridging the gap between the department and the public, consistently ensuring that information was communicated clearly and effectively.
Mabona, who joined the department in 2017, reflected on his journey with gratitude, highlighting the relationships he built with educators, school leaders, the media, and communities. He described his role as both a privilege and a learning experience that deepened his understanding of public service.
“It is with sincere gratitude and reflection that I share news of my departure from the Gauteng Department of Education, as I embark on a new chapter in my professional journey, “Each interaction has deepened my understanding of public service and reinforced the value of transparent, responsive communication,” said Mabona
He extended his appreciation to colleagues within the department, as well as to school principals, educators, and members of the media, acknowledging their support and collaboration throughout his tenure. Mabona also thanked parents and communities for their trust, noting that their reliance on clear and timely information underscored the importance of his role.
The department credited Mabona’s dedication to public service with leaving a lasting impact on Gauteng’s education system. As he steps away, he expressed optimism about future opportunities while leaving the door open for possible paths to cross again.
His departure signals the end of an era for the GDE’s communications office, with stakeholders across the sector expected to feel the absence of one of its most recognisable voices.
