EMPD Acting Chief Seeks Special Leave Amid Commission Allegations

Julius Mkhwanazi, the acting chief of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), has applied for special leave following explosive testimony presented at the ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

In an exclusive interview with eNCA, Mkhwanazi confirmed he submitted the application on Tuesday and is now awaiting approval from the council. He stated that his decision is intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the allegations made against him, which he firmly denies.

The move comes after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified last week that the EMPD official facilitated the registration of vehicles linked to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is facing attempted murder charges. The testimony supported the claim that Matlala appeared to enjoy “too much privilege from law enforcement.”

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the EMPD acting chief maintains his innocence. “These allegations are unfounded and have not been investigated,” he insisted, adding that all proper procedures were followed in the vehicle registration process.

The decision to step aside temporarily highlights the growing pressure on officials implicated in the commission’s proceedings, as investigations into alleged misconduct within law enforcement continue to unfold.
