The driver accused of causing the devastating crash that killed 14 schoolchildren is expected to return to court on Wednesday to formally apply for bail.
Twenty-two-year-old Ayanda Dludla is facing multiple charges following the fatal incident in January. He has been charged with 14 counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of driving without a valid permit.
Dludla allegedly collided head-on with a truck while transporting schoolchildren to school in Vanderbijlpark, resulting in the deaths of 14 pupils and leaving several others injured.
The matter is scheduled to be heard in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court, where Dludla is expected to present his formal bail application.
During his previous court appearance, Dludla abandoned his initial bid for bail. At the time, his legal representative, Reward Nxumalo, told the media that his client was deeply remorseful and struggling emotionally following the crash.
Nxumalo said Dludla had been battling to cope with the situation while in custody and required psychological support.
Despite initially withdrawing his request, Dludla has since decided to proceed with a bail application, which will now be heard before the court.
The case has drawn widespread public attention due to the high number of young lives lost in the crash, with families of the victims and members of the community closely following the court proceedings.
