COPE President Mosiuoa Lekota Passes Away After Illness

The Congress of the People (COPE) has confirmed with deep sadness the passing of its President, Mosiuoa Gerard Patrick Lekota, following a period of illness.

In a statement issued by COPE leadership, the party said the Lekota family has requested privacy during this difficult time and appealed to the public and media to respect their wishes. The party added that it will release further updates regarding memorial arrangements and tributes in due course.

“On behalf of the leadership, membership and supporters of COPE, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lekota family and all South Africans who mourn this loss,” the statement read.

In August last year, Lekota stepped back from politics to focus on his health. At the time, the party confirmed he was unwell, as he continued to battle an undisclosed illness.

Lekota was a towering figure in South African politics whose career spanned decades. Born on 13 August 1948 in the then Orange Free State, he became politically active at a young age and was involved in anti-apartheid activism. His political work led to his imprisonment on Robben Island, where he served alongside several prominent leaders of the liberation movement.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across the political spectrum as South Africans reflect on Lekota’s long career in public service and his contribution to the country’s democratic journey.

Details regarding memorial services and official tributes are expected to be announced by COPE in the coming days
