364 Suspects Arrested During Operation Shanela in Tshwane

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, conducted another Operation Shanela in the Brooklyn and Lyttelton areas on Thursday, 16 October 2025, following a zero-tolerance approach to crime.

The operation reflects the ongoing commitment of law enforcement in the Tshwane District. It was led by District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine and supported by various SAPS units, the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, the Department of Community Safety, and local Community Policing Forums.

During the operation’s first phase, detectives arrested 295 suspects for various offences, including:

  • Two cases of murder
  • Seven cases of attempted murder
  • Three cases of armed robbery
  • Four cases of rape

In the second phase, uniformed officers detained 59 undocumented foreign nationals, who were handed over to immigration authorities. Two individuals were also arrested and fined for employing undocumented migrants.

Other operational successes included:

  • 941 people and 406 vehicles searched
  • 25 identified hotspots patrolled
  • 16 liquor establishments inspected, with two closed for non-compliance
  • 24,000 millilitres of liquor confiscated
  • Three second-hand goods dealers fined for violating the Second-Hand Goods Act
  • One suspect wanted for fraud arrested

Traffic officers issued 120 traffic infringement notices under the AARTO regulations, totaling R112,100 in fines.

Major General Thine expressed his appreciation to all participating departments and members for their continued cooperation and dedication.
