The South African Football Association (SAFA) has launched a fierce challenge against FIFA’s decision to dock Bafana Bafana three points for fielding an ineligible Teboho Mokoena. Labeling the ruling an “unprecedented outcome,” SAFA expressed deep disappointment that the verdict was delivered “without reasons” and without an opportunity to present their legal defense.
The sanction, which turns March’s 2-0 win over Lesotho into a 3-0 forfeit, knocks South Africa off the top of their World Cup qualifying group. SAFA has formally requested the written reasons for the judgment and intends to lodge a formal appeal within the 10-day deadline. The appeal adds a dramatic layer of uncertainty as coach Hugo Broos prepares his squad for the two must-win final qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
