Mzansi Youth Urged to “Show Up” as IEC Launches 2026 Election Campaign

The Electoral Commission of South Africa officially launched its national campaign for the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE) on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, marking the beginning of the country’s official election campaign period ahead of the 4 November 2026 polls.

The launch signals the Commission’s readiness for the upcoming elections and forms part of a nationwide drive to encourage South Africans to participate in the democratic process. The campaign also introduced the IEC’s national communication strategy aimed at informing citizens about voter registration, election processes, and the importance of voting.

A major focus of the campaign is increasing youth participation at the polls. The IEC says it plans to target young voters through digital platforms, social media campaigns, community outreach programmes, and partnerships with educational institutions in an effort to encourage first-time voters to register and cast their ballots.

The Commission believes young people have a critical role to play in shaping local government leadership and addressing issues affecting communities, including unemployment, service delivery, and development.
