Young SAPS constable faces multiple charges in Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court

The very badge meant to protect the public became an instrument of terror this week, as a 24-year-old police constable stood shackled in the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The young officer, whose name has been withheld pending further investigation, faces a harrowing cascade of charges—ranging from stabbings and vehicle theft to the unthinkable: discharging a firearm inside the hallowed halls of the Majola Police Station itself.

According to a somber statement from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the nightmare began not in some distant criminal underworld, but within the ranks of those sworn to uphold the law. Over the weekend, the constable allegedly embarked on a violent spree, stabbing multiple victims in separate incidents before stealing vehicles under the cover of darkness. Each offense, investigators say, seemed more brazen than the last.

The reign of blue-on-blue chaos reached its terrifying climax when the constable reportedly stormed back to his own place of duty—Majola Police Station—and opened fire. Bul holes now scar the interior walls of the very building where community members come to seek safety. Miraculously, no fatalities have been reported, but the psychological wound inflicted on the rural Eastern Cape community runs deep.

“The trust between the public and the police is fragile enough without one of our own turning the station into a war zone,” a local ward councillor lamented outside the court.

Magistrate Thabo Nxumalo remanded the accused in custody, citing the severity of the charges and the risk of further violence. The case has been postponed for a formal bail application. As the young constable was led back to the holding cells—past the silent stares of former colleagues—the question echoed through the coastal town: if the protectors become predators, who answers the call?
