In a landmark meeting that could shape the future of South African football broadcasting, executives from French media giant CANAL+ sat down with Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza to negotiate a new long-term broadcast agreement, just over a year after CANAL+ completed its $2 billion takeover of MultiChoice and its SuperSport channels. The high-stakes talks, held at the PSL’s Johannesburg headquarters, aim to extend and potentially expand coverage of the Betway Premiership, major cup competitions, and youth development leagues such as the Diski Challenge as the current broadcasting deal approaches its expiration date. Dr. Khoza, speaking after the meeting, described the PSL as “far more than a sporting league—it is cultural infrastructure that sparks national conversations, unites communities, and provides hope and aspiration for millions of young South Africans.” He emphasized the need for a partnership that respects football’s social significance while delivering commercial value. CANAL+ executives reportedly pledged a suite of technological innovations to enhance viewer experience, including enhanced multi-camera coverage, real-time analytics overlays, and expanded digital access for fans unable to watch traditional broadcasts. The timing is crucial, with the current season delivering one of the most thrilling title races in years as Orlando Pirates chase down perennial champions Mamelodi Sundowns. A successful new deal would ensure continued investment in club infrastructure, youth academies, and match-day productions. While financial terms remain under wraps, both sides expressed optimism that a final agreement could be signed before the current deal lapses. “Football must grow with its audience,” a CANAL+ spokesperson said. “We are committed to taking the Betway Premiership to every corner of South Africa and beyond.”
