SAPS Seizes R3.7 Million Worth of Illicit Cigarettes in Sedibeng Operation

Police in the Sedibeng District have delivered a significant blow to the illicit tobacco trade after intercepting a heavy-duty truck secretly loaded with counterfeit and contraband cigarettes valued at an estimated R3.7 million during a meticulously planned intelligence-driven operation on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. The operation unfolded in the early morning hours along the R59 highway, a known smuggling corridor linking Gauteng with the Free State and beyond. Acting on a tip-off developed over several weeks by the District’s Visible Policing and Crime Intelligence units, officers strategically stopped the target vehicle just outside Vereeniging. Upon searching the truck, police discovered the cargo hold had been cleverly modified with a false bulkhead, behind which thousands of cartons of illicit cigarettes were concealed beneath tarpaulins and agricultural supplies. Preliminary forensic testing confirmed the cigarettes bore no legitimate tax stamps or manufacturer serial numbers, indicating they were destined for illegal spaza shops and informal vendors across Sedibeng and potentially as far as the Eastern Cape. No arrests were made at the scene as the driver fled into nearby bushes during the stop, but authorities have identified him through vehicle registration and CCTV footage. “This seizure dismantles a major supply node feeding underground networks in our townships,” said Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thibela. “Each illicit pack funds broader criminality—from smuggling rings to cash-in-transit heists.” The estimated street value of the seized goods represents not only lost tax revenue for the fiscus but also a direct attack on legitimate tobacco retailers. The SAPS has urged anyone with information on the driver’s whereabouts or the intended recipients of the consignment to come forward. The investigation continues, with additional arrests expected.
