For the popular Lekompo musician Lehlogonolo “Shebe Maburna” Chauke, freedom remains a tantalizingly distant melody. The Polokwane High Court on Wednesday postponed his much-anticipated bail appeal to 12 June, prolonging the agony of an artist who has now spent over six months behind bars. Chauke, whose infectious beats once dominated Limpopo’s airwaves, appeared before the court in a green prison uniformāa stark contrast to the flamboyant stage costumes his fans have come to love.
The 28-year-old musician has been in custody since November 2025, following his arrest on charges that his legal team has fought fiercely to contest. While the exact nature of the allegations remains sub judice, court insiders suggest the case involves a violent altercation that has left the Lekompo community deeply divided. Some rally behind the star, insisting he is a victim of mistaken identity; others demand justice, arguing that fame should not grant immunity.
On Wednesday, Chauke’s defense lawyers launched a passionate bid before Judge Mpho Lekala, arguing that the lower court had erred in denying bail. They pointed to their client’s strong community ties, lack of previous convictions, and his status as a sole breadwinner for aging parents. “He is not a flight risk. He is a musician, not a fugitive,” one advocate insisted.
But the State pushed back, citing the seriousness of the charges and alleging that Chauke might interfere with witnesses if released.
After tense arguments, Judge Lekala ruled that more time was needed to consider the voluble submissions. The court rose, and Chauke was led back down to the holding cellsāflashing a brief, weary smile at the handful of supporters who had traveled from his home village.
For now, the music waits. The next note will be played on 12 June.
