LAUDIUM – Residents of Laudium are taking a firm stand against a surge in vehicle thefts and violent crime, as the Community Policing Forum (CPF) intensifies its collaboration with local police, traffic authorities, and private security teams.
CPF chairperson Shaheen Wahab confirmed that the forum has ramped up efforts following a spike in incidents, including an armed robbery on Bengal Street, Ext 3, last week that left two people injured.
“Our community is seeing an increase in vehicle thefts and violent crimes,” Wahab said. “Through weekly Station Crime Combating Forum meetings with Laudium SAPS and TMPD representatives, we monitor crime trends, discuss ongoing cases, and implement targeted interventions.”
The CPF has implemented several key measures to enhance safety:
- Hotspot Monitoring: Sharing real-time intelligence between CPF members, police, and security companies.
- Visible Patrols: Conducting volunteer patrols during high-risk hours alongside law enforcement.
- Joint Operations: Partnering with the TMPD on stop-and-searches and roadblocks.
- Private Security Collaboration: Extending daytime coverage through coordinated efforts with security firms.
- Infrastructure Advocacy: Campaigning for improved street lighting and camera surveillance in crime-prone areas.
Wahab stressed that crime prevention is a shared responsibility, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately via CPF WhatsApp groups or the SAPS emergency line, 10111.
In a recent incident, six to eight suspects attacked a family in an armed robbery, stealing two Toyota GD6 bakkies. Thanks to a Cartrack tracking device, one vehicle was recovered through swift coordination between the CPF and the Gauteng Traffic Wardens Saturation Unit. The suspects remain at large.
Wahab also shared practical safety tips for residents:
- Park vehicles in well-lit or secured areas.
- Avoid idling outside homes at night.
- Be alert to vehicles or individuals following you; drive to the nearest police station if suspicious.
- Consider installing anti-theft devices like steering locks or tracking systems.
- Encourage neighbours to remain vigilant and report unusual activity promptly.
“The CPF will continue to work tirelessly alongside law enforcement to ensure criminals do not gain a foothold in our community,” Wahab affirmed.
The Laudium initiative underscores the power of community-led crime prevention, demonstrating how a combination of technology, volunteer efforts, and strong partnerships with law enforcement can make neighbourhoods safer.
