“Destroy the Illegal Guns”: Gauteng Committee’s Urgent Demand After Westbury Teen Shooting

JOHANNESBURG – In the wake of a brutal shooting that left two teenagers dead and five others injured, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature has issued a forceful directive to police, demanding an immediate and sustained crackdown on the illegal firearms flooding communities like Westbury.

The call for action comes after seven teenagers were gunned down on Tuesday in a suspected gang-related attack, reigniting long-standing fears over community safety and the proliferation of illegal weapons.

A Direct Mandate for Police Action

Dr. Bandile Masuku, Chairperson of the Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, laid out a multi-point plan to address the crisis.

“We call upon SAPS to immediately intensify and sustain targeted operations to locate, confiscate, and destroy the vast number of illegal firearms in circulation in Westbury and across Gauteng,” Masuku stated.

The Committee’s demands go beyond immediate raids, calling for a systemic overhaul of firearm tracking. This includes a “centralised and urgent audit of firearms lost from state institutions and private security companies,” aiming to plug the sources of weapons that end up in criminal hands.

Data and Civil Society as Key Tools

In a significant push for transparency and data-driven policing, the Committee also reiterated its call for SAPS to begin reporting detailed statistics on crimes committed using firearms. This move is seen as crucial for understanding the full scale of the problem and measuring the effectiveness of police interventions.

Furthermore, the Committee is advocating for strengthened support for initiatives such as Gun Free South Africa, signalling a belief that combating gun violence requires both law enforcement and preventative civil society efforts.

The shooting and the Committee’s urgent response underscore a critical juncture for the province. As another community is rocked by violence, the pressure is mounting on law enforcement to move beyond condemnation and demonstrate tangible results in disarming the criminal elements that terrorize neighbourhoods. The people of Westbury, and Gauteng at large, are now watching to see if these strong words will be followed by even stronger action.
