Three Injured in Serious Crash on M1 at Crown Interchange

Rush hour on Johannesburg’s notoriously congested M1 freeway turned to chaos on Monday afternoon when a serious multi-vehicle collision at the Crown Interchange left three people injured and brought traffic to a grinding halt across one of the city’s most vital arterial routes. Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 2 p.m., where they found a tangled mess of twisted metal, shattered glass, and debris strewn across multiple lanes.

According to eyewitness accounts, the crash involved at least four vehicles, including a delivery van, two sedans, and a light truck. The precise sequence of events remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest that a heavy goods vehicle may have experienced brake failure while descending the steep gradient approaching the interchange, triggering a chain reaction. “I heard a screech, then a massive bang,” said motorist Thabo Mokoena, who was trapped in the ensuing gridlock for nearly an hour. “When I looked up, cars were spinning like tops.”

Paramedics from Emer-G-Med and City of Johannesburg Emergency Services arrived within minutes. Three individuals—two men believed to be in their thirties and one woman in her forties—were extricated from their vehicles with injuries ranging from moderate to severe. One victim, a passenger in the delivery van, suffered suspected spinal trauma and was immobilized on a spine board before being airlifted by helicopter to a nearby trauma center. The other two were transported by ambulance to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in stable but serious condition. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

The crash caused a ripple effect of delays that lasted well into the evening. The M1 southbound carriageway near the Crown Interchange was completely closed for over three hours as forensic investigators combed the scene and cleanup crews worked to remove debris. Traffic was diverted via the M2 and local Crown Mines roads, leading to secondary congestion across surrounding suburbs. Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision or possesses dashboard camera footage to come forward. Motorists are advised to expect residual delays during Tuesday morning’s commute as investigations continue.
