Contralesa Warns Against Illegal Initiation Schools

The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) has issued a strong warning to initiation school owners who admit young boys without the consent of their parents.

Speaking during Mpumalanga’s Initiation Coordination Committee session in KwaMhlanga, Contralesa President Chief Lameck Mokoena expressed concern over reports that some boys are being taken to initiation schools against their families’ wishes.

Mokoena alleged that some initiates are subjected to ill-treatment and that many of the schools involved are operating illegally without proper registration. He further raised concerns about some school owners charging excessive fees.

Contralesa has condemned these practices and called on parents to remain vigilant when choosing initiation schools for their children. Mokoena urged parents to report any cases of abduction, abuse, or illegal initiation activities to the police.

He stressed that individuals who misuse cultural practices to exploit or harm young boys would face serious consequences. Contralesa reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity and safety of initiates while preserving cultural traditions through lawful and regulated initiation schools.

The warning comes as authorities and traditional leaders continue efforts to improve oversight and ensure safer initiation seasons across the country.
