The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) has placed its president, Sisisi Tolashe, on a leave of absence pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings instituted by the African National Congress (ANC).
The decision was taken during a Special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng, on Saturday.
The move follows the ANC’s decision to subject Tolashe to disciplinary processes after allegations were made against her. The ANC had also instructed her to resign as a Member of Parliament following her dismissal from Cabinet by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
According to ANC Women’s League secretary-general Nokuthula Nqaba, the Special NEC was addressed by ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who presented the ANC NEC’s decision following findings by the ANC Integrity Commission regarding allegations against Tolashe.
Nqaba said the ANCWL NEC discussed the matter extensively and reaffirmed its obligation to comply with decisions taken by the ANC. She added that despite the seriousness of the allegations, the organisation remains guided by the principle of natural justice and the constitutional presumption of innocence.
The ANC Women’s League noted that the ANC had not instructed Tolashe to step aside but had instead referred her to disciplinary structures. As a result, the Special NEC unanimously resolved that she should take a leave of absence to focus on the disciplinary process.
The leave of absence will remain in effect until the ANC concludes its disciplinary proceedings. ANCWL officials are expected to formally communicate the decision to Tolashe.
In line with the ANCWL constitution, Nqaba will assume the functions of president during Tolashe’s absence. The constitution provides that where both the president and deputy president are unavailable, the secretary-general assumes the responsibilities of the president.
The NEC has also called on ANC Women’s League members to remain disciplined and allow the ANC to complete its internal processes.
Nqaba said the ANCWL remains committed to the renewal of the ANC and to advancing the full liberation and emancipation of women.
