14 Zama Zamas Arrested After Shootout With Police in Brits

A predawn silence shattered into thunderous chaos Tuesday as fourteen illegal miners, infamous as Zama Zamas, engaged South African police in a ferocious shootout beneath the dusty hills of Brits, North West. The operation began around 3:00 AM when a specialized tactical unit moved in on an illicit mining syndicate operating inside an abandoned shaft. Intelligence had tracked the group for weeks, linking them to not only ore theft but also armed robberies and extortion in surrounding communities.

As officers approached the perimeter, concealed sentries raised the alarm. Within seconds, hidden positions erupted with automatic rifle fire, forcing police to dive behind boulders and vehicles. The exchange lasted nearly fifteen minutes, tracer rounds slicing through the darkness as officers returned disciplined volleys. Despite the Zama Zamas’ fierce resistance and superior firing positions, police tactical superiority prevailed. No officers were injured, though several suspects sustained minor wounds during the firefight. After the shooting ceased, law enforcement swept the encampment, unearthing crude mining equipment, gold-bearing ore, and an arsenal of high-caliber weapons.

All fourteen suspects, aged between 22 and 45, were arrested on charges of illegal mining, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms. Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed the suspects will appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court later this week. “We will not allow criminals to turn North West into a war zone,” Mohlala declared. The crackdown marks the latest victory in an ongoing provincial offensive against illegal mining networks terrorizing local residents and legitimate operations alike.
