Ngizwe Mchunu Issues Public Apology to Julius Malema and Court Over Defamatory Remarks

In a striking turn of events at the Pretoria High Court, former media personality and cultural activist Ngizwe Mchunu stood before a packed gallery to issue a public and unconditional apology to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, as well as to the court itself. The apology came shortly after Mchunu was found guilty of contempt of court for repeatedly making defamatory statements against Malema—remarks that he had been explicitly prohibited from republishing under prior legal orders.

The long-running dispute stems from allegations Mchunu made in previous years, accusing Malema of involvement in illicit activities. Despite court interdicts barring him from repeating such claims, Mchunu continued to voice them during public interviews and on social media platforms, prompting the EFF leader to pursue further legal action. In a tense courtroom atmosphere, Mchunu conceded that his repeated violations showed blatant disregard for the judiciary’s authority.

“I, Ngizwe Mchunu, hereby apologize unreservedly to Mr. Julius Malema, his family, and the EFF,” he said, reading from a prepared statement. “I also apologize to this honorable court for undermining its orders. My remarks were reckless, unsubstantiated, and I regret the harm they caused.”

Mchunu went on to acknowledge that his defiance had not only damaged Malema’s reputation but also eroded public confidence in the rule of law. He vowed to abide by all future court orders and refrained from making any further statements about Malema without verifiable evidence.

Legal analysts noted that while the apology may mitigate sentencing, contempt findings can still carry fines or imprisonment. Malema’s legal team accepted the apology on principle but indicated they would study the court’s final ruling. As Mchunu left the courthouse, he appealed to the public and the media to respect the judicial process, marking a humbling end to a bitter legal chapter.
