Orlando Pirates have parted ways with midfielder Sipho Mbule following the conclusion of his one-year contract, bringing an unceremonious end to a turbulent stint at the Soweto giants. The 28-year-old, once affectionately nicknamed “Masterchef” for his dazzling form with the national team, will leave the Buccaneers after failing to cement a regular starting berth in the club’s league campaign.
Mbule joined Pirates at the start of the 2025/26 season on a short-term deal, hoping to resurrect a career that had stalled following his high-profile move from SuperSport United to Mamelodi Sundowns. While he featured in Pirates’ MTN8 and Nedbank Cup triumphs – contributing valuable minutes in knockout football – his Premiership performances told a different story. Across the entire league season, Mbule managed just three starts in the famous black and white jersey, registering neither a goal nor an assist. His lack of game time raised questions about whether he had fully regained the sharpness that once made him one of the country’s most exciting midfield prospects.
His agent, Mahlatse Motaung, confirmed the departure late on Wednesday, stating that the club had not provided specific reasons for allowing the player to leave. “We respect the decision. Sipho is grateful for the opportunity and the trophies won, but now it is time to look forward,” Motaung told local media.
Immediately, Stellenbosch FC has emerged as the frontrunner for Mbule’s signature. A potential reunion with coach Lehlogonolo Seema – who previously worked with Mbule at SuperSport United – could be the ideal environment for the midfielder to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his creative spark. The Winelands club is known for reviving careers and has a clear tactical identity that may suit Mbule’s ball-playing abilities.
Meanwhile, Pirates remain active in the transfer market. As part of a separate deal with Stellenbosch, the Buccaneers are swapping midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane for defender Thabiso Lebitso. The club is also monitoring Stellenbosch forward Gamphani Lungu. Back at Orlando Stadium, striker Tshegofatso Mabasa faces an uncertain future, with clubs both locally and abroad reportedly circling. As for Mbule, his next move will determine whether the “Masterchef” can once again cook up the magic that made him a fan favourite.
