With over 35 million customers between them, Capitec and TymeBank users can bypass the traditional wait by using a simple, low-cost banking trick—here’s how.
JOHANNESBURG – For the millions of South Africans who bank with Capitec and TymeBank, the wait for in-branch Smart ID and passport services will extend into next year. However, a simple and affordable workaround exists right now, allowing customers to completely avoid the notorious queues at traditional Home Affairs offices.
The solution? Open a low-cost secondary bank account with one of the banks already partnered with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
Why a Second Account is the Key
The current eHomeAffairs system, which operates from 30 pilot bank branches, requires payment to be processed through the bank’s own internet banking platform. This means you cannot simply walk in and pay with cash or a card from another bank; you must be an account holder with that specific institution.
The good news is that opening a digital bank account has never been easier or cheaper. Four of the six participating banks offer transactional accounts with monthly fees of under R10, making this a minimal investment for a significant time-saving benefit.
Your Affordable Banking Bridge
To use this service, you can open one of these low-cost accounts:
- Absa Transact Account: R6.50 per month
- FNB Fusion Account: R7.50 per month
- Standard Bank MyMo+ Account: R7.50 per month
The process remains the same as for any other customer:
- Fill out the online application form on the eHomeAffairs website.
- Make a booking at your selected bank branch.
- Use your new bank’s internet banking to approve the payment.
- Visit the branch for biometric capture (photos and fingerprints).
- Collect your new Smart ID or passport from the same branch.
This method eliminates the hassle of paper forms, offline payment systems, and endless queues, condensing what is often a day-long ordeal into a swift, appointment-based visit.
While Capitec and TymeBank plan to join the programme in 2026, this clever hack empowers their customers to take control of their admin today, turning a potential frustration into a manageable task.
