McKenzie Threatens ‘Mass Exodus’ of PA Officials in Ultimatum Over Kunene’s Job

Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie has dramatically escalated his party’s confrontation with the ANC, threatening to trigger a “mass exodus” of all elected PA officials if his deputy, Kenny Kunene, is not reinstated to the City of Johannesburg’s mayoral committee.

The ultimatum was delivered on Saturday during a solemn ceremony commemorating Robben Island political prisoners, highlighting the high-stakes political theater of the situation. McKenzie declared that merely swearing in Kunene as an ordinary councillor is insufficient, and that only his full reinstatement to the powerful mayoral committee will prevent the PA from carrying out its threats.

This hardline stance is directly tied to McKenzie’s promise to resign from his position as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture in the Government of National Unity (GNU) this coming Tuesday. He has made it clear that Kunene’s reinstatement is the only thing that will make him reconsider stepping down, a move that would destabilize the delicate GNU arrangement.

The threat of a “mass exodus” suggests a coordinated withdrawal of PA representatives from various government positions, a move that could cripple coalition-led municipalities across the country and significantly increase the pressure on the ANC to acquiesce to the PA’s demands.
