Ford Transit Vehicles Recalled Over Battery Safety Concern

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a nationwide recall of certain Ford Transit and Transit / Tourneo Custom vehicles due to a potential battery-related safety risk.

According to the NCC, the recall was issued following notification from Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, affecting 582 vehicles from the 2022 to 2026 model range that were sold across South Africa between 2021 and 2025.

The issue is linked to the H7 AGM battery used in the affected vehicles. Authorities warn that the battery may malfunction, producing an acidic smell similar to rotten eggs inside the cabin, along with possible hissing sounds or visible gas release. In some instances, occupants may also notice unusual warmth in the seating area.

The supplier further indicated that rising temperatures could trigger a chemical reaction in the battery, releasing hydrogen sulphide gas. Prolonged exposure to this gas could pose health risks to passengers.

Motorists who own the affected models are urged to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised dealership for inspection and repairs. The NCC confirmed that all necessary repairs will be carried out at no cost to consumers.
