ActionSA has publicly reaffirmed its support for Xolani Khumalo, the party’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, ahead of his planned appearance at the Katlehong police station on Monday morning.
Khumalo is expected to hand himself over to police following allegations linking him to an assault case. However, the party has dismissed the claims as malicious and politically motivated.
ActionSA National Chairperson Michael Beaumont said the allegations stem from information allegedly leaked from within the South African Police Service (SAPS), suggesting that Khumalo was to be arrested in connection with a case involving an alleged drug dealer. According to the party, the same individual later opened what it describes as a false assault charge against Khumalo.
Beaumont argued that the situation highlights deeper problems within law enforcement, particularly corruption and the protection of criminal networks. He said ActionSA leaders and supporters would accompany Khumalo to the police station as a show of solidarity.
“This is something South Africans know all too well,” Beaumont said. “Police are failing to remove criminals from our streets and are often implicated in the drug trade. When community leaders confront drug dealers, they are instead harassed and arrested.”
He added that the party had investigated the matter and was confident that the allegations against Khumalo were unfounded. Beaumont stressed that ActionSA would not suspend community activists based on accusations made by individuals it claims are involved in criminal activities.
The case is expected to draw significant public attention, with ActionSA positioning it as a broader test of police accountability and political integrity in Ekurhuleni.
