Retail group Woolworths has announced plans to roll out its “next generation” store format across South Africa, following the successful launch of its flagship revamp at Tygervalley in 2025. The move signals a significant investment in the retailer’s physical footprint as it seeks to enhance the shopping experience, drive customer loyalty, and compete more effectively in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.
The Tygervalley store, which underwent a comprehensive redesign, served as a testing ground for a range of innovations aimed at modernising the Woolworths shopping experience. These include enhanced food halls with expanded fresh produce and ready-to-eat offerings, dedicated beauty and wellness sections, improved digital integration for seamless omnichannel shopping, and a greater emphasis on sustainability through reduced packaging and energy-efficient design.
The “next generation” format also prioritises customer convenience, with self-service checkouts, click-and-collect points, and in-store Wi-Fi enabling shoppers to access product information and personalised promotions via the Woolworths app. The layout has been reimagined to create a more open, inviting atmosphere that encourages browsing and discovery.
Woolworths CEO Roy Bagattini described the Tygervalley revamp as a “resounding success” that exceeded expectations in terms of customer feedback and sales performance. “Our customers told us what they wanted, and we listened,” Bagattini said. “The next generation of Woolworths stores is about bringing that vision to life across the country.”
The rollout will begin with high-traffic stores in major metropolitan areas, including Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria, before extending to smaller regional centres. The company has not disclosed the total investment or the exact number of stores earmarked for revamp, but analysts expect the programme to unfold over the next 18 to 24 months.
The initiative comes as South African retailers face mounting pressure from online competitors, changing consumer preferences, and a challenging economic environment. By investing in its physical stores, Woolworths is betting that a superior in-store experience, combined with a robust digital offering, will be key to retaining and growing its customer base.
For shoppers, the rollout promises a more modern, convenient, and enjoyable retail experience. For Woolworths, it represents a strategic bet on the future of bricks-and-mortar retail in a digital age. As the first revamped stores open their doors, the market will be watching closely to see whether the Tygervalley magic can be replicated at scale.
