Nzimande Releases Science Funding Report for Public Comment

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Professor Blade Nzimande has released a report on science, technology and innovation funding for public comment.

The report examines the impact of the withdrawal of United States funding from major biomedical, health and clinical research programmes, particularly those focused on HIV and tuberculosis.

Nzimande says the funding withdrawal has highlighted South Africa’s reliance on external funding and the need for a stronger domestic research funding system.

The report proposes increased investment in research and development, protection of critical health and biotechnology programmes, and stronger cooperation between government, universities, science councils and industry.

The report is open for public comment until 31 December 2026.
