A 54-year-old South African man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday after customs and police officers discovered suspected cocaine concealed in his luggage, just moments before he was scheduled to board a flight to Hong Kong. The arrest underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement to intercept drug trafficking operations through the country’s busiest airport, which remains a key transit point for illicit substances.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the man was selected for a routine search during the check-in process, during which alert officials noticed anomalies in his luggage. A subsequent physical search uncovered a quantity of a white powdery substance, which tested positive for cocaine. The exact weight and street value of the drugs have not yet been disclosed, pending further forensic analysis.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is expected to face charges of drug trafficking under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. He is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court in due course. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests, as the investigation continues into whether the man was acting alone or as part of a larger smuggling syndicate.
The arrest is a significant win for the multidisciplinary team operating at OR Tambo, which includes the South African Police Service, the South African Revenue Service customs unit, and the Hawks. In recent months, the airport has seen several major drug busts, including the interception of 334 kilograms of cocaine valued at over R200 million just last week.
