Over 70 Illegal Miners Arrested as Police Seize Gold-Bearing Material and Firearms in Carletonville Raid

In one of the largest crackdowns on illegal mining in recent months, police have arrested more than 70 suspected illegal miners in Carletonville, seizing gold-bearing material and firearms during an intelligence-driven operation. The raid, conducted under Operation Prosper, was still an active crime scene on Tuesday as authorities continued to process evidence and apprehend additional suspects.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the operation targeted a network of disused mine shafts and informal settlements in the Carletonville area, which has long been a hotspot for zama zama activity. Officers from multiple specialised units, including the Hawks, the National Intervention Unit, and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, descended on the area in the early hours of Monday, catching the suspected miners off guard.

The seized gold-bearing material is believed to have been extracted from illegal excavations and was being processed for sale on the black market. Firearms recovered at the scene suggest that the syndicates operating in the area are heavily armed and prepared to defend their operations with violence. Police have linked illegal mining to a broader web of criminal activity, including money laundering, human trafficking, and the funding of gang violence.

“The arrest of over 70 suspects is a significant blow to the illegal mining networks that have plundered our mineral wealth for far too long,” Masondo said. “We are sending a clear message that this criminal enterprise will not be tolerated.”

The suspects are expected to face charges including illegal mining, possession of gold-bearing material, and possession of unlicensed firearms. They are due to appear in the Carletonville Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

Operation Prosper is part of a broader national strategy to combat illegal mining, which costs South Africa billions of rands in lost revenue each year and wreaks environmental devastation. The Carletonville raid is being hailed as a major success, but authorities acknowledge that dismantling the syndicates behind the trade will require sustained effort and cross-border cooperation.

For the community of Carletonville, the operation has brought a measure of relief, but also a reminder of the deep-seated challenges that continue to fuel the illegal mining economy. As the investigation continues, the focus will be on ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and that the stolen wealth is returned to the state.
