Weather Alert: Severe Thunderstorms and Flooding Threaten Large Parts of South Africa

A significant portion of South Africa is on high alert for severe weather on Wednesday, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a Yellow Level 2 warning for destructive thunderstorms. The storm system is expected to sweep across the central and eastern interior, bringing a combination of hazards that could disrupt travel and cause localised damage.

The areas most at risk include Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and the North West. Major cities like Johannesburg, Durban, and Bloemfontein have a high probability (60-80%) of experiencing these intense storms, which are forecast to deliver heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail.

The primary concerns are localised flooding in low-lying areas, reduced visibility on roads, and potential damage to property from strong winds and hail. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay indoors during the storms, avoid crossing flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor items. While the Western Cape and southern coastal areas will remain dry, the severe weather serves as a stark reminder for the rest of the country to brace for a volatile weather day.
